Schedule An Appointment Request Jose (Jody) O. Ortega, M.D. Dr. Ortega non-operatively treats a wide variety of musculoskeletal and sports medicine injuries and has a background in primary care and sports medicine. Although he has an interest in the conservative treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee, including viscosupplementation injections, he enjoys seeing patients of all ages, including little leaguers, high school and college athletes, weekend warriors and active seniors. A 1991 graduate of Auburn University, Dr. Ortega earned a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering. He then went on to attend the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, graduating in 1996. Remaining in Birmingham, he completed his internal medicine residency at Baptist Health System in 1999, followed by a primary care sports medicine fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute from 1999 to 2000. Dr. Ortega is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and also holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in primary care sports medicine. He is a member of several medical organizations, including the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Sports Medicine, the Southern Medical Association and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. Dr. Ortega serves as a team physician for McAdory High School and Alabama State University and provides sports medicine assistance to Troy State University and Auburn University. He has also participated on the World Bowl medical team for NFL Europe for several years. Dr. Ortega enjoys spending time with his family, as well as playing golf and basketball, fishing and participating in other physical fitness activities.
