Biography Information

James A. Whiteside, M.D.

At the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center, James A. Whiteside, M.D., assists in the training of the primary care sports medicine fellows and mentors residents in internal medicine, family practice and pediatrics. His teaching experience includes service as an associate clinical professor of orthopaedics and sports medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and an assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Miami Medical School.

Dr. Whiteside is a graduate of Auburn University with a degree in pre-medicine. His post-graduate education includes a master's degree in physiology from the University of Wisconsin and a medical degree in 1953 from the University of Alabama Medical School in Birmingham. Dr. Whiteside also performed a fellowship in pediatric oncology at Sloan Kettering Cornell Medical Center in New York City.

Before entering private practice, Dr. Whiteside served in the United States Navy as both a pharmacist's mate and lieutenant (junior grade) in the Medical Corps. He then established a private practice as a board-certified pediatrician in 1958, beginning his career in Coral Gables, Florida. He would later serve as senior medical team physician for Pennsylvania State University prior to joining Alabama Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in 1987. After the dissolution of Alabama Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center he joined Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center as Physician Emeritus.

During his tenure at Alabama Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center he provided sports medicine coverage for the athletes of Samford University and the Troy State University football team. Dr. Whiteside is also a member of the American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association, Medical Association of the State of Alabama, National Athletic Trainers Association, American Medical Association of Sports Medicine, American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine and American College of Sports Medicine. His research involves surgery of the elbow, arm, wrist and hand, and he has penned articles on these subjects in relation to sports medicine.

Dr. Whiteside and his wife, Edith, are the parents of five children and seven grandchildren.
